A ship with a dark overlay with three circles outlining the hierarchy of UX needs

Not all user needs are the same and they aren’t all equal.  They can be broken down to:

  • Must – what is essential to fulfil a task?
  • Should – what is important but there is a way around it?
  • Could – what really is a nice to have?

They aren’t always very clear to determine, so to break it down think of it with regards to a ship:

  • A ship must have a hull in order to float
  • A ship should have a mast in order to move
  • A ship could have a crow’s nest to see around it afar
